Information on Fruit Trees

Many people probably don’t realise that those beautiful flowering trees that we see throughout the spring and summer are fruit trees.  The definition of a fruit tree is a “tree bearing edible fruit”.  A fruit tree is one that produces fruit that will be eaten by humans.

The different types of beautiful and delicious fruit trees are apple and pear, which are known as “pome” fruits.  Then you have “stone” fruit trees such as cherry, peach, nectarines, apricots and plums.  These are the most common ones, but avocado, banana and the citrus fruit trees, orange, grapefruit and lemon are also considered fruit trees.

Olive Trees Around the World

The olive tree has been around for centuries. Even the ancient Greeks cultivated them.  At one time they were raised in the Mediterranean area, but they have spread to many areas of the world.  The olive tree is a small tree that produces many varieties of olives. They come in several colours and sizes.

Olive trees are usually planted in groves, but you can have just one or two. Soil that contains high chalk content is great for growing olives.  Olive oil is used in cooking and the wood makes great furniture.  Olives are grown in Spain, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Lebanon, and the United States.  You can also find them in more Middle East and European countries.
