The Topiary Tools

Feedback from researchers who were familiar with location enhanced applications resulted in the splitting of the Topiary tool into three parts. One, the active map. Two, the storyboard. Three, the test workspaces. These different workspaces address challenges for the Topiary prototyping tool for location based applications.

Designers will use the Topiary Active Map workspace in creating models of people, places, and/or things. In the map, the designer will be able to demonstrate scenarios which describe location and contexts. Topiary is able to model both indoor and outdoor locations, being independent of sensing technologies. Designers may also upload sketches to use in the Storyboard workspace. After uploading several sketches, the designer can allow real end users to test the design in the Test workspace by running the test on a mobile unit like a PDA. The user can interact with the storyboard and the wizard will follow the people, all the while making updates to the locations of the users with another device outside of Topiary.

Designers may use the Active Map workspace to model spatial relationships. The designer can sketch a map or upload a graphic image to the workspace to use as a positioning background for the objects placed in the map. The graphic may also be displayed to real end users in the Test phase. There are other tools available in Topiary for the designer. The pencil tool will allow the designer to draw paths for the Wayfinding feature. To create entities in Topiary, the designer will use the Place tool. With it, the designer outlines a boundary of a place. With the Person tool, the designer will select the Person tool, then click on where he would like the person to be. The Thing tool is exactly the same, only for use for objects. The people or things can be placed anywhere on the map that the designer wishes in their Topiary prototyping.

Scenarios are captured and shown in the Scenario Producer tool that is located in the toolbox on the far right. This tool uses a window in green to select things of interest. This is much like a screen capture tool and will open a recording window that can be placed over things of interest to the designer. It may be resized at need. A dialog box then opens to allow Topiary designers to check objects of interest or uncheck them to remove all data related to that object.

When several pages have been completed, the designer can decide to run the scenario in the Test workspace. By opening a ‘pie’ menu the designer will be taken to the start page they choose and can then click the Test option. The Test workspace has two options, the Wizard UI and the Ed User UI. The End User UI is what users will see and the Wizard UI is where the designer can simulate contexts. There are also a Radar View that gives the designer an aerial view of the map and the Story board analysis window which gives a simple view of the workspace to the Topiary designer.
