The work of designers in creating location-enhanced applications is now very much eased by Topiary. This new and revolutionary application tool enables designers to eliminate the spatial barrier between people, places and objects.
Topiary local-enhanced prototyping tool is designed in a 3-step structure and it helps designers configure a plan based on three components . An Active Map, a Storyboard and a Test application. Each of these three facilitates the design of a reliable local-enhanced application.
The first step is the Active Map that enables the designers to create a pattern of the location of places, people as well as things. The map can be either sketched or loaded in a GIF or JPEG format. Either way, the map appears like a background image that helps the designer create the spatial coordinates between people, places and objects. There are a few tools that the designer can use to create the map. The Place tool enables the creation of places, the Person tool helps the designer create a person, the Thing tool is used to create things and of the same importance there is the Scenario Producer tool that Topiary provides for the creation of scenarios. All these tools are equally important, and have revolutionised work for many designers.
The next step is the Storyboard application. Within the Storyboard designers compose inside or outside scenarios that directly assist in helping the user locate the spatial context. These scenarios are in fact independent sentences established as reference points aimed at wherever one clicks a button. Topiary designers must specify the scenario that corresponds to a specific button and with every click the user is automatically directed to the corresponding map. A scenario can be created by designing it into the Active Map Workspace using links and screens that mark the succession of pages. However, Topiary also eases the removal of these scenarios by use of the Eraser tool, a valuable item, as we are all prone to mistakes
Topiary encourages designers to test their creation on a mobile device. While a user gets familiarized with the maps and scenarios, a wizard follows the operation updating the spatial situation of people and things and does this on a separate device. The testing of such a device allows the real-end users give the necessary feedback. Topiary makes this testing procedure easier by creating such a reliable and easy-to-use prototyping tool. The test workspace is easily accessible by selecting the test option from the menu.
The evaluation for an early implementation of Topiary was successful, as the participants generally liked the concept. The survey was made with 7 participants that were given a few tasks in order to rate the utility and the easy usage of the location-enhanced application tool.
Topiary is the first prototyping tool used for location-enhancement applications, but the creators have also designed many other prototypes for various domains, like: the "UbiWise" or "iCap", application tools for prototyping simulations of ubicomp devices, and respectively for prototyping context-aware applications.
