Creating a Living Wall with Evergreen Trees

Evergreen trees can be the perfect solution when it comes to creating privacy or sectioning off areas of a piece of property. With the help of evergreen trees, a living wall can be created that will last through all seasons.

Most people first think of shrubs when considering creating a living wall. There are, however, other types of evergreen trees that can be selected from as well. In addition, you must determine if you want to create a more formal living wall that will be pruned and shaped or if you want a natural living wall that will be left to grow into its natural shape.

For small yards, hedges are often a good choice because of the limited space a small yard affords. Since hedges can be pruned and shaped easily, they can be made to fit the space perfectly. Of course, maintaining this wall will require some time on your part. So, this must also be figured into the equation.

If you have more space available for your living wall, you might want to create a “loose,” or less formal barrier. A great way to do this is to layer various types of evergreen trees and shrubs. The tallest specimen should be placed in the back with the trees you plant getting progressively shorter as they move toward the front. Also, if you are planning to plant a variety of different specimen, plant odd numbers of each. This helps to create the more natural feel that characterizes loose borders.

You also need to consider the amount of sunlight the area receives each day when selecting the evergreen trees you will use. Obviously, if you hope to have healthy trees that grow to their fullest potential, you need to provide them with the proper amount of light.
